You cannot unsubscribe and still participate in the forum via the newsgroup.
You must remain subscribed.  You do not, however, have to receive mail!  You
can set your subscription to "No Mail" (done via the web interface, I'm
pretty sure it can be done via email also) and you will remain subscribed,
but not receive each individual message.

You don't have to be subscribed to read the newsgroup, but participation
still requires subscription.
