Pat,
Yes, both printers have IPDS feature codes. The NP-21 has twice as much
memory but we get the following error on the NP-21 but not on the NP-17.
                         Additional Message Information

 Message ID . . . . . . : PQT3351 Severity . . . . . . . : 40
 Message type . . . . . : Information
 Date sent . . . . . . : 10/02/01 Time sent . . . . . . :
09:37:37

Message . . . . : Device storage is not sufficient for resources and data
   for this sheet.
Cause . . . . . : Device SHIPPRT is out of storage and cannot print this
sheet. All resources that were not needed for this sheet were deleted.
The
error occurred in file SHP165P number 0005 in job
168536/HGUSTAF/GUSTAF02.
Page 000001 was being processed at the time of the error. Processing of
the
print request ended. The previously listed PQT3630 message contains the
sense data received from the printer for this condition.
The error was detected with reason code 2. The reason codes have the
   following meanings:
1 -- Resources could not be deleted because they are needed for this
   sheet.

2 -- Some resources were deleted but sufficient storage is still not
   available.
If you are printing N-up, there was not enough storage to contain all
the
resources needed for the entire sheet.
Recovery . . . : Submit the print request with fewer resources, if
possible, or submit the print request to a device with a larger storage
capacity. The data stream manual for your device contains more
information
   about the error.
 Technical description . . . . . . . . : The internal message identifier
(ID)
   is RCRMC003.

Subject: Re: IPDS printing

It is not likely you will get the "exact" same results with a tcp/ip
connected printer vs a native attached printer. The one thing you didn't
mention was, do BOTH printers have a IPDS feature code ??? I assume that
the NP-17 has the IPDS feature and the other printer does NOT.

This remains one area of weakness in TCP/IP and I don't see IBM
really performing any fix to the problem.

They are attempting to keep tcp/ip "standard" and IPDS is not
industry standard.

Some folks have had fairly good luck getting the more advanced
data streams to work using tcp/ip but most have results similar
to yours...

This is the "other side" of dumbing down the output data for cheaper
data networks. When you start seeing a lot "font substitution"
messages, this tells me that the printer doesn't care for some of
the fonts you are attempting to use and this will slow the process
down even more. IPDS under HPT is a poor substitute for native
attached in my opinion.
