WRKSYSSTS should add up if you count 1MB as 1024K and 1GB as 1024MB, the binary 2 to the power 10; Jeff Bull -----Original Message----- From: steven.donnellan@simonjersey.com [mailto:steven.donnellan@simonjersey.com] Sent: 31 August 2001 11:40 To: midrange-l@midrange.com Subject: RE: IBMathics : was WrkActJob percentages are way off This is a multipart message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] IBM once drove ourselves and our accounts department nuts with a £12k invoice that was just identified as 'hardware'. We were fairly sure if we had £12k's worth of hardware delivered, one of us would have tripped over it, banged our head on it, or just noticed the big cardboard box with 'IBM' stencilled on the side of it. The letters stopped coming from IBM, and started coming from the collection agency... Eventually, a lot of to-ing and fro-ing identified this 'hardware' as being an RPG/400 licence. Sirius Cybernetics Corporation style management or what? As for infinite improbability, I have had Queries that take seconds to produce the result when you press F5, but take days to run when you submit them to batch. That's a mystery I'm still trying to crack... I also can't quite get WRKSYSSTS figures to match the amount of memory we actually have installed, but I usually put that down to decimal places and have a lie down. As for simple (not) adding-up problems, perhaps a nice, strong, hot cup of fresh tea will cure it; I accept that a severe reprogramming with a space-axe would be more satisfying. I have been using 'fiddle-factors' for years on AS/400 numbers that do not add up - here's another, add up the disk space in libraries, folders etc, add the current unprotected storage, you can get quite close to the %used, but it is always a couple of percent out. It is a branch of maths which kind of explains why restaurant bills never seem to add up, particularly when a group needs to pay for 'only what they've had'. The more you break down the bill, the less accurate is the total. I have suspected for some time that there is a similar but new branch of Math emerging from IBM, I shall call it 'IBMathics'. Topically, it is evident on the WRKACTJOB and WRKSYSACT displays, but also in the Performance Tools reports, and curiously it has infected IBM invoices. Does anyone have any other evidence of IBMathics for the list to review ?
