Hi Roger - >I am looking into the option of getting an ADSL connection for a >customer. I know that there will need to be an ADSL modem. I KNOW >THERE WILL be a firewall (probably Sonicwall-XPRS2). What I haven't >been able to find the documentation for is if they will need a router >as well. Does the firewall provide that function? If not is the router >needed between the modem and firewall or firewall and intranet >(switch)? The firewall provides NAT. Assuming that the ADSL connection has an Internet Service Provider at the other end, you don't need a router; the ISP provides the routing functions. You just hook the ADSL modem to the WAN port of the firewall and the LAN switch to the LAN port of the firewall. If they have servers that need to be WAN acessible, those need to have a WAN IP address and be hooked to the DMZ port. The firewall does provide the routing functions to direct traffic to the LAN or DMZ ports. Ken Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada, Inc.
