Every once in a while, a great idea comes across on this list that gives me cause to slap myself upside the head. I've been toying with the idea of LAN console or that "other" console to support our remote AS/400s and have been hearing about the problems with these products (is it just Charly? Anybody else? How about some success stories with LAN Console - anyone?)
Chris, could you please describe your system console setup with a little more detail? Are you using an Emerald 5250 card? Instead of the PCAnywhere, we'd probably have to hook this up to our existing network. Well, silly question, but is PCAnywhere dialup-only, or does it support access via a network? It's been a while since I've worked with PCAnywhere.
>> We are not using this for our system console at this time. We do have an Emerald 5250 card in a PC and use the ETU function for reading a floppy disk the we receive monthly. We also use PC Anywhere via the LAN to control several PC, but not the one with the Emerald card. Will PC Anywhere allow a DOS session, I do not know. I use to use a DOS 5250 emulator on a twinax attached PC as a system console back on V1.2. I could use this PC as the system console to do save 21's. I was not running APPN but pure 5250 emulation on a twinax card.
The only thing I could see that we'd be missing from LAN Console if we went with 5250 emulation on the system console is the ability to access the iSeries system panel. This wouldn't be a *great* hinderance as 90% of what we'd use this for would be for functions that require a dedicated system, i.e. Save-21.
The twinax 5250 emulator worked in a restricted state. You could not see the front panel though.
