That's a large question. What is the box in the DMZ running? If it's
Java-enabled you can use IBM's Java Toolbox to access data queues on the
host, or call a program. Or you can write your own socket listener on the
AS/400 and communicate via TCP/IP. Or you can connect to the HTTP server on
the AS/400 using normal HTTP requests.

In any of these cases, you then need to define a protocol. A protocol
defines a request and a response for each type of message - for example, you
might define a type 01 request to server ITEM to return a specific item.
This is where the work comes in.

A typical client/server architecture supports the following server type:

1. CRUD (Create/Read/Update/Delete): This type of server allows read/write
access to records in one or more related databases.

2. QUERY: This type of server performs the types of multi-level inquiries
more associated with SQL requests.

3. BATCH: This type of request runs a batch job on the host without
returning any data - it might generate a printed report, for example, which
can be converted to PDF and accessed later.

Once you get started, you build skeletons for each of these server types and
then clone them as needed.
