I'm sure I understand this correctly, but what if you're out of warranty but have an IBM hardware service contract? Can we still get Service Director? Is it a free service?

Hardware maintenance is usually included for one year, and service director is included with hardware maintenance.
You have to have your CE come out and install/configure it.
It does need a modem on the box.

Joe,
You've heard from Rob and Gary so I guess you have your answer :-) Give your CE a
call. I'm not sure how it works but I would think whether you had hardware
maintenance or not, it should be on there for the warranty period ? Or am I wrong
? Here and at my previous employer we had hardware and software maintenance so I
never had to worry about it and thus could be off on what I am assuming is
included ;-)
Let us know what you find out.
