But size does affect you as well as everybody else on this list, and everybody 
using the same servers as everybody on this list and everybody using the same 
network, etc.

A very specific element is the mail listserver itself. Since you receive items 
from it, it affects you. If it must send out a thousand list e-mails that are 
10K in size because there are a thousand subscribers and somebody posted a 
message that's ten times longer than it needs to be, then there are that many 
more packets that must be shoved through the socket, both on the sending and 
the receiving sides, plus through every intermediate node. You might not 
notice, but it affects you.

It can certainly affect you when the thousand recipients see who sent it, 
though you might not notice that immediately either. Of course, if you don't 
care, then it doesn't matter.
