I've run into problems with identical tape devices, not able to read one anothers tapes..as strange as that sounds.
As an alternative , why not try transferring a library file accross to whatever machine you want, loading the resultant object into an empty library for taping..

I have a _real_ S/36, and 2 AS/400s (9402-C04, and a 170).  All have a 1/4" tape drive. I need to save a library from the S/36 and restore it to either of the 400's (I'd prefer the 170, but the old 9402 will do in a pinch).  Any ideas on tape density, etc?
