Back in the late 80's or early 90's I read a New York Times article about an operating environment that was generating some interest with some Wall Street firms. It was a distributed computing scheme using a network of RS/6000's where one master organized number crunching tasks among the slaves. Apparently a couple of banks or brokerage firms were trying to use it for some sort of processing-intensive financial analysis. It was touted as being a potential Cray beater with considerably less investment in hardware. At any rate, the system, named Linda, grew out of a college student's Master's project.
