Re: "Off" command

SIGNOFF is the OS/400 coomand line to sign off the system.  I suggest that 
instead of SIGNOFF & ENTER you do SIGNOFF & F4 because sometimes you want the 
*LIST option.  We have put this on bottom of all our menus ... one option for 
normal sign-off & another option to capture error log if user has had some 
problems.

OFF is a S/36 command line to sign off the system.  However, depending on how 
you access S/36, you might be accessing it from within OS/400, so that OFFing 
S/36 takes you back to the OS/400 point at which you initiated your S/36 
session.

Before we moved most of our business to OS/400, I created an OF command on 
S/36 because the most common mistake of people signing off S/36 was to 
misspell OFF.

I was tempted to create an OS/400 command like EX short for EXIT which runs 
SIGNOFF, but we have almost all of our klutzes trained on using menus now.

We use M/36 & are not familiar with the S/36 environment.  I am aware that 
IBM will soon end M36 & I have been screaming at my users that we need to 
reach a consensus on what to do with our applications on M36 because I 
predict that our Business Partner will sell some new box to top management 
with latest version of OS & suddenly all the M36 stuff will be unreachable & 
gone for ever & ever & you will complain to high heaven but I will not be 
able to do a darn thing ... all that data will be lost ... unless we reach a 
consensus on where the data needs to go, BEFORE top management is suckered 
into latest IBM box & OS by some IBM business partner ... you will recall 
that the last time we were sold the latest box we had to suffer several 
months of lemon/400 because it did not occur to top management to ask about 
the sizing questionairre so we got the wrong setup for our needs & next time 
it is not going to occur to top management to ask about M36 no matter how 
many times I warn of this in advance.

Most of our users get to M/36 by a menu option that we have setup for them, 
so they never have to remember the command strings.  A handful of work 
stations, for people who do very heavy M/36 access, are setup as belonging to 
AS/36, wnich means if you power them up, they show a S/36 sign on screen.  
Keying OFF there returns one to the S/36 sign on screen.

A few of these users are a bit klutzy & forget how they got to OS/400 or S/36 
& they do the pass through command to get to the reality from which they came 
& we have a locked up session in both OS/400 and S/36.

More common are the folks who forget how to exit when it is time to shut down 
for the evening, so they just turn off their equipment while it is in the 
middle of a pass through.  How soon we forget ... we never had OFF on S/36 
menus because OFF was the only command anyone had to remember.
