Hi Jim

NFS stands for Network File System - it's a Unix system for sharing
drives/partitions/directories between machines over the network. It's the
equivalent of Windows mapped drives - like NetServer provides. I don't
know for sure, but I think it will require TCP/IP connectivity to work.

I use it at work to share directories off our AS/400s to my Linux box, as
Netserver only seems to work with Windows clients[1]. The cool thing is
the AS/400 can run as an NFS client - in that it can share a directory
off my PC (running an NFS server) and see my drive as part of the IFS
(haven't got that side working yet, though). I can use the full set of
Linux utilities on the NFS mounts, which offers a lot more power than
Qshell, but obviously I need to do this from my PC.

There was a good article on NFS in News/400 recently (I think it was the
May issue) and there's a redbook "Exploring NFS on AS/400, SG24-2158-00"
available at <http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg242158.html>

Although it's a Unix convention, I believe there are clients & servers
for Windows, though I don't know if there are free implementations as per
Linux.

I'm no expert on it, but I'll answer what I can

Regards, Martin

help here.
