Eric,

We use SynonCool 2/e for most of our work, excellent tool.

I've been using it for about 7 years.  At this job, for the IBM API
interfaces that I create I typically use ILE RPG to create external programs
that are still available in the model.  IFS interface objects are in either
ILE RPG or C.

CA, the latest 2e owner, claims that a release is on the way that will
generate ILE code.
