What I do in cases like these is on the DDS screens I define NUMERIC
fields (with the proper length etc.)
Then in the RPG I do a MOVE to an alpha field eg.
MOVEL CUSTN  CUSTA  
I then use CUSTA to chain to the database, (or whatever).
