Several previous comments have pointed out the price/performance advantage
of Intel computers over the AS/400 pertaining to Domino applications. I
don't dispute the Intel advantage. But how much will a faster AS/400
processor help? Not that much, I'm afraid.

The AS/400 is optimized differently than a PC. AS/400 price/performance is
exceptional when it comes to a large mixture of 5250 and batch jobs,
multiple device support, inter process communications, and access to the
native file and database systems.

This points to one of the difficulties of porting applications from Intel to
AS/400 platforms. Memory management is different. The file system is
different. Device drivers are different. CPU speed can only do so much.

But, where there is a problem, often there is also an opportunity. For
developers who focus on the AS/400 as their primary platform, and use native
API's, file system, etc. Their programs won't suffer from poor performance.

Nathan Andelin.
