Using Pascal's Wager, or what I understand it to be from Hans, what is
the win by going to 4.4 vs. the risk of hard crashing the 170 and facing
a humiliating and expensive service call to IBM to straighten out the
disaster?

My further understanding is that companies can not do illegal acts.
They can be fined, etc, but the criminal is always a person. You want to
head up the department that is doing illegal practices like pirating
software? You want to run the risk of being the "example" that some
software company or association chooses as their "highly visible target"?

Why be a crook, even for a paycheck.
