Don you forget two things. With nearly any GUI set of solutions you are always just a few days from completion but never actually there, and delivery to the end users is a whole new career path for someone. _______________________ Booth Martin boothm@earth.goddard.edu http://www.spy.net/~booth _______________________ "Schenck, Don" <Don.Schenck@WL.com> Sent by: owner-midrange-l@midrange.com 01/11/2000 01:46 PM Please respond to MIDRANGE-L To: "'MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com'" <MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com> cc: Subject: RE: Have you read this? Martin -- How about doing the AS/400 programming in one of the most popular languages on the planet. A language supported by THOUSANDS of books and many periodicals. An easy-to-learn language that allows you to use procedure or object-oriented approaches to the problem. A visual language. But basic in its difficulty. :) And then use, say, a graphical reporting tool for reports. Something that makes it crystal clear to the user as to what will be seen. Run everything in Windows; use the AS/400 as the database server. The "Server Of Choice". My God ... Yesterday I got caught with a sudden need to upload a PC csv file to an AS/400. I've never done that, and had visions of a messy crash & burn. I used the new Client Access Express. I've never done the transfer up before, and there wasn't a Physical File on the AS/400. I had the transfer finished in about 15 minutes. My reaction is that IBM is making the AS/400 modern and competitive and doing it quickly. About RPG: sure its old but it's original appeal of being learnable by average mortals is still a great strength. We need to carry that banner. C, Java, C++, PERL, SQL and so on are all OK for what they do, but for a business oriented report program generating language, RPG is still the best by far. +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +--- +--- | This is the Midrange System Mailing List! | To submit a new message, send your mail to MIDRANGE-L@midrange.com. | To subscribe to this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-SUB@midrange.com. | To unsubscribe from this list send email to MIDRANGE-L-UNSUB@midrange.com. | Questions should be directed to the list owner/operator: david@midrange.com +---
