Nope...IPDS  printers can be AFP with no additional software...
You can create a printer overlay on another 400 and print it on
the other machine just fine.. IPDS printers present fewer problems
than trying to do it without IPDS...

The software(Advance Function Printing Utility) helps you create
overlays
and various custom forms..

IPDS is a "hardware" function and it allows you to create an IPDS data
stream
that "can" print bar codes,boxes,logos,pictures,etc.... IPDS goes
"waaaay"
back to the S/34 as I recall...

Check out the Printing on the AS/400 versions 1-5(?) which go into a LOT
of
detail on how to do printing magic....
