  • Subject: Remote Outqueues vs. Print Devices

We are currently handling all our printer needs through TCP/IP and remote
outqueues. We have no problems except for maybe twice a month one of our 50
printers (in 6 divisions across three states) hangs on timeout errors and we
have to end it and restart it. We have just upgraded to V4R4 and our
consultant tells us we should go to print devices because of performance
reasons. I don't want to have to start dealing with those dumb alignment
and formtype messages, but I could use Reply Lists for those perhaps. I am
also concerned with stability... especially since our users absolutely do
not have the capacity or desire to manage them.

Is there a marked improvement in performance using print devices rather than
remote outqueues?
How is the stability with print devices on TCP/IP?
What is everyone else out there doing?

TIA for any feedback.
