We changed our laser printers over to LAN print devices a few months ago
and it's been something of a headache ever since. We receive two messages
from them repeatedly: 1.CPD337F-- "Remote device rejected an attempt by the
writer to open a connection" which seems to indicate a conflict between
printing from the LAN and printing from the AS/400. 2. CPA403D--"Operator
action required on device XXXXXXXX (C R)." This last one is the big problem
because no matter what response you give it, it puts the spooled file on
hold and cancels the writer.

For my two cents worth, I'd heed the immortal words of the person who first
said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Subject: Remote Outqueues vs. Print Devices

We are currently handling all our printer needs through TCP/IP and remote
outqueues. We have no problems except for maybe twice a month one of our
50
printers (in 6 divisions across three states) hangs on timeout errors and
we
have to end it and restart it. We have just upgraded to V4R4 and our
consultant tells us we should go to print devices because of performance
reasons. I don't want to have to start dealing with those dumb alignment
and formtype messages, but I could use Reply Lists for those perhaps. I am
also concerned with stability... especially since our users absolutely do
not have the capacity or desire to manage them.

Is there a marked improvement in performance using print devices rather
than
remote outqueues?
How is the stability with print devices on TCP/IP?
What is everyone else out there doing?

TIA for any feedback.
