Here is some RPG3 code to try is out for your self. 
H        1   Y                                              
C                     MOVE *DATE     DATEL   80             
C                     DEBUG          DATEL                  
C                     SETON                     LR  

It worked for me on RISC 4.2 & 4.4 .
