Gary,

The best way is to start the Performance Monitor and let it collect some
data for you to analyze.  It does take some resource to do, but the impact
is minimal.  My recommendation would be to pick an hour where you have
frequently noticed slowdowns and collect for one hour on 5 minute intervals.

Once you have collected the data, use the Performance Tools to take a look
at what was happening during that hour.  You should get a pretty good
picture of what was happening right down to the job level if necessary.

I just traced down an ugly response time issue on a Model 730 doing this.
My peak response times were 1 + seconds for SPLS devices passing through
from an S/390.  Come to find out it was the T1 line from the remote location
needing work in the remote site.  We found the problem and which
device(s)/location through the job info in the Performance Tools!
