Eric,

  I have worked with literally hundreds of Courier modems all in async
mode.  The documentation does state: "The Courier may be connected to
synchronous serial ports for connection to mini and mainframe
computers." but never says how.  There is not one single reference to
how to set the modem for sync mode.  I have used with great success
Hayes Ultra series modems for this purpose if you can find one of them
laying around.  I don't think I'd waste the time experimenting with
the USR unless you have better docs than I do.

  Oh, and Patrick is right. The modem definately is in async mode by
default and will not connect to your 7855. They may handshake for a
few seconds but drop when the computers can't communicate.
