Don't wait for RPG III to gain the ability to define data types or you'll
wait a long time.

RPG III (or RPG 400 if you prefer) is DEAD - the only 'enhancements' that
will be made will be to allow it to handle/ignore any new data types that
are added to the database - or any similar change that would be needed to
prevent it from crashing and burning.

Type defs have been considered for RPG IV but present a number of problems
which did not arise in adding the support to COBOL.  It only really makes
sense in RPG IV if you have completely free-form syntax available (which I
notice was one of the options on the development crew's "shopping list"
that was published here a few days ago.
