I worked at a client site where they have been using a client server order entry system since 94. The front end was written in Visual C++ and all data access to/from the AS/400 was done using socket programs written in Pascal. The socket pascal programs captured data from the PC and passed it on to RPG programs. From what I heard, performance was quite acceptable.
