Put simply, APIs let you do OS400 functions directly from your HLL
program. Many times, functions that you write in CL can be
performed directly via an API (such as sending messages, checking
on the status of a device, sending a document as E-mail, etc..) and
will usually perform faster with better features and with more
reliability. Think of them as the subroutines that IBM uses to
perform OS functions and you'll be on the right track.

Learning API programming can be a real hair pulling experience, as
the documentation for APIs is a little cryptic. But once you try it
a few times, you'll start getting the hang of it. Watch the
magazines for example code to get you started...

IBM supplies some rudimentary interfaces for some of the APIs.
These are generally found in library QSYSINC, and contains things
like data structures and parm lists.....

I don't have any books here besides softcopy, but I know some are
     available for API programming....

Okay, everyone has the right to a stupid question. Here is mine. I keep
seeing things about APIs. I have no idea what you are talking about.
 Help!

Rajeev,

I don't know if this was previously mentioned, but rather than copying
or scanning the joblog there is the Retrieve Request Message (QMHRTVRQ)
API which provides several methods for retrieving previously executed
commands. The API can be found in the Message Handling APIs chapter of
the System API Reference and would not require periodic recopying of the
joblog or filtering on your part for non-request messages.
