To the best of my knowledge, IBM's Workstation Gateway does not provide for ANY data encryption of information (including userid / password).  This puts it in the same class as Telnet in terms of security (if you're concerned).  There are several third party packages which provide much higher levels of security and user interface than Workstation Gateway.

You can solve the encryption problem in one of two ways.  You either use a product which supports an appropriate (for you) level of encryption or you buy a firewall product which includes a client module that encrypts traffic between your remote users & the firewall.

Encrypting products would include I/NET Webulator, CST Jacada, or LANSA for the Web for example.  For that matter, you could even use Client Access for TCP/IP in conjunction with an encrypting firewall cleint (the AS/400 firewall doesn't do this!).  At that point, it all comes down to the user interface that you want to provide to your users (Terminal, Web html, or web java).

For more information, you can check out the AS/400 remote access & Internet security links at:

Hope this helps!
