I believe you can name a file with more than 10 chars if you create it
using SQL Create command, but as you said, you can't describe it in
RPG, or manipulate it with most native as/400 commands, which is a
major drawback.  

I think that long file names can be a good thing, until about the 10th
time in an hour you've had to type it :)

In a point-and-click environment, this isn't a problem, but
programming for Budget_Vs_Actual_Digital_Clock_Purchases_Year_to_date
gets to be a pain after a while.
