1998/9 AS/400 User Group Kick Off Meetings
with
John Sears!

John Sears has more than 36 years of experience in the
IT industry and has worked for IBM for more than 30 years. He has
been instrumental in the development of AS/400 architecture and has
extensive experience in the areas of design, programming, database
management, performance and client/server computing. Sears is an
elected member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He is also a
recipient of the COMMON Speaker Excellence Award.

8:30 Using DB2/400 Part 1
All data should be used through a Logical_File/View and associations
should be made in DB2/400 rather than in the program where it is
possible
and practical to do so. The rationale behind these statements is
the substance of this lecture. The objective is to teach the correct
and most effective use of DB2/400. It assumes that the student knows
the basics regarding building and processing Physical_Files/Tables
and Logical_Files/Views. Also, Version 3 Release 1 of DB2/400 provided
a system wide catalog which will be covered in this discussion.

10:00 USING DB2/400 Part 2
Dependencies between Physical_Files/Tables should be managed using
referencing constraints and trigger programs should be used to schedule
events, provide a single point of control for maintenance and editing
activities. The rationale behind these statements as well as how
to set these functions up and considerations when using is the substance

of this lecture. The objective is to teach the correct and most
effective
use of DB2/400. This topic will cover Referential Integrity (RI)
and Triggers along with isolation levels (commitment control) and
physical and logical blocking. DB2/400 is a FULL function Data Base
Management System (DBMS) that serves applications running on AS/400
and applications implemented using client/server technology.

WMSUG - Grand Rapids

8:30 Client Server Considerations & Performance
In a Client/Server environment resources such as stream files,
relational
DB Tables (Physical Files) and application logic can reside on either
the client or server or split between the two -- The Client/Server
model is derived from where resources are placed. The focus of this
lecture is to discuss the items that should be considered when deciding
where to place resources, and performance considerations regarding
the design of the client application and use of the AS/400 as the
server. Data base serving performance will be covered in considerable
detail this is the client server model used most widely.

10:00 DB2/400 Performance Considerations
When using DB2/400 as a structured file system there are several things
a programmer and DB designer/administrator can do to optimize
performance.
This topic focuses on these critical performance items. DB2/400 is
considered to be used as a structured file system when programs use
RPG & COBOL operation codes (READ/CHAIN/SETLL... or
READ/REWRITE/START...)
to access & manipulate the data base.

implemented your thoughts!

Watch for the newsletter coming soon! Looking forward to seeing you
again - you may want to get to this kickoff meeting early - John Sears
will draw a crowd and with IBM's help we'll be sending out 1200 flyers.
Our thoughts - the more people who attend the user group the more
valuable the time will be for everyone.
