I think though that the answer is simple; it doesn't care. You _don't_ need to do STRCODE to use VaRPG apparently. Just be connected to the AS/400 with TCP/IP, and it should run. (I think this is true, but I guarantee nothing!) btw, it is looking better and better with every session. If it continues to hang together, then it has real potential.
