One technique that has appeal in certain circumstances is to begin using
the LDA for the switch settings.  The LDA is longer than what was use on
the Sys/36, so you have some confidence that a particular area in the LDA
can be reserved for a particular set of switches.  ie, 801-808 = A/R
switches for process 1.  809-818 = A/P check writing process.  Switches
can then be 1 or 0 (and, if you want, any other value).  LDAs can also be
written to files so a user's LDA can be saved and then restored the next
time the user signs on.  The LDA can be written or read in the RPG
program, or in CL, so the information is always available.
