Here's a thought.  Maybe the stability of the AS/400 means we (AS/400
developers) are spending time thinking about and solving business
problems.  Because we're being served well by the AS/400, we aren't in
'need' of some new method or 'fad' or answer.

Maybe our counterparts on other platforms (such as UNIX and NT) are so
swamped with hardware problems and software crashes that they spend all
their time just keeping the system up and running.  Any new method or
'fad' or answer that comes along may be perceived as a silver bullet
that is desperately needed to keep their heads above water.  

This is a gross oversimplification (and not meant to start a flame war),
but I have felt for years that there is some truth in the above.
