The 400 isn't stuck in the 70's, but we might be. On the other hand, don't knock the RPG cycle hastily--there's nothing better for doing reports, AFAIC, as long as the input file is prepared the way you need it (with OPNQRYF or STRQMQRY to run SQL to an outfile or whatever). Level breaks make for an extremely compact, easy-to-write report program. That's what the 'language' was originally, right, a Report Program Generator, and it does that very well in its original form, the RPG cycle. It's just awfully hard, it seems, to find new programmers who've learned it.

AS I've said before here, use the best tool you know of for the job at hand, and keep learning both new and old stuff.
