IPL'ing is good, but not required every week. We do it weekly as well,
but I think you could change to monthly with little trouble. I'd also
sugest a RCLSTG once in a while, perhaps quarterly. If DASD usage
starts shooting up, an IPL can help (clears QRPLOBJ, among other
things). This is kind of like asking should you change your car's oil
every 3,000 miles? Well, yes, but the world won't end if you go 6,000!
IBM doesn't publish comparisons to mainframes - mainly becuase the
integrated nature of OS/400 makes it very hard to. But in gerneral, the
530 is pretty much a small mainframe.

This won't help that much, but the 530 ranges from an IBM CPW
(Commercial Processing Workload) of 272.8-509.9, depending on processor
feature. The biggest CISC AS/400's (320-2052 & F97) were only 177.4.
The first AS/400 (B10) was 2.9!

BTW, if you use ILE programs, you will see a performance boost by
upgrading to V3R7. The upgrade from V3R6 is pretty easy.
