Chuck,

One thing you will find is that (if you are keying transaction) there is
more keying on every transaction. You also will end up doing "TW"
(inter/intra-warehouse transfers) between locations. That's about the only
downside.

On the plus side, better inventory controls (you know WHERE the parts
actually are), you can store and track them accurately in multiple
locations, you can MUCH better define your warehouse and factory floor
stocking.

There's a lot more, but too much for this forum. If you want more detail
than you can handle on this topic, contact Jeff Snyder directly. He's a
expert in this area. You can reach him at jeffreygsnyder@xxxxxxxxxxxx
Warning! Be prepared for a VERY lengthy response. :)

That's said in humor, but it's also very true. He can definitely give you
a good rundown on advantages and disadvantages.

We use both types of warehouses here, and take advantage of the pluses of
each where they actually will benefit us. I determine which to use based
on what moves through the warehouse, how I have (or want) to track it (for
accounting and control purposes), volume of transactions, and value of
transactions and inventory. Also the number of items, difficulty of
monitoring and keeping accurate counts, and so on. There's a lot of
factors that I use.

Currently a "Uncontrolled" warehouse, see some reasons to become a
"Controlled" warehouse.
The most obvious being the ability to stock the same part in more than one
location.

What are other advantages and disadvantages of "Controlled vs
Uncontrolled"?

What issues might there be if I were to convert from Uncontrolled to
Controlled?
