The compiler doesn't care. It is a convention - some use it to signify local variables (as opposed to fields which are "global" inside the class). This helps the reader to know the scope of the variable.

Eclipse knows enough about your program to be able to color code the two kinds differently which is very helpful. It is subtle but still extremely helpful.
Actually I have looked at some code and found it strange in some way, and after a while I found that a constant had been named like a field in CamelCase instead of THE_USUAL_CONSTANT_SYNTAX. Fixing it made the strangeness go away :)
