In that case I'll just share that we got the "yes/no" functionality we needed from appletviewer :)

It silently exits if given an URL which receives an answer from a webserver, without any <APPLET>-tags in it. If the webserver isn't there or reports a "Page not found" an I/O exception is printed.

This combined with the Acme.Server.Serve tiny web server written in Java, allowed us to test if a customer had access to a given port through a firewall.

So - all done in Java hence on topic :-)
