Actually, now that I think of it ... that shouldn't be the case (although for my testing, I do set it that way because that's the way my application is intended to be run).

When I'm debugging code running in a Japanese JVM, the katakana characters show up as question marks.
Which debugger do you use on which version of OS/400?

I spent some time with IBM clarifying that the Classic JVM in V5R3 may go haywire when debugging with Eclipse (socket attach) leaving a zombie that refused to die. They didn't want to fix it so I rewrote the legacy java program so it used the toolbox instead of accessing files directly, plus turn to lots of logging so there would be no reason to debug in production (whee).
