David,

When you download and install Tomcat from the Apache group can it still
"plugin" to the Apache HTTP server the way the one that IBM ships does? If
not, then how would you handle a web site that had some static content or
CGI/Net.Data that required the Apache server?

Does Tomcat have any built-in ability to validate against AS/400 user
profiles, as WebSphere does? If not, and it can plug in to Apache, I
wonder if that protection could be applied by Apache? Did you have to
write the LDAP validation or just configure it?

Thanks

Mark

Bruce,

I would go with the Tomcat 4.0.6 or 4.1.12 from the Apache group. It
will be
far faster than IBM's version. If you need a startup script go to:
http://www.iseries-toolkit.org and follow the Anonymous CVS link to the
src/sh
directory and you will find some scripts to get you started. You might
also
check out: http://www.midrangeserver.com/mpo/mpo021402-story02.html.

You can validate several ways with Tomcat. You can set up your own
realm and then pass the authentication information to the 400 using the

toolkit procedures. I have an example of this that we use to go to an
LDAP
server on our network. We copied the JNDI realm that comes with the
base
Tomcat distribution (open source has its advantages) and modified
it to go against our LDAP server. You should be able to find out more
at:
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/tomcat-4.1-doc/realm-howto.html.

If you need examples or anything I would be happy to supply them.

Thanks David for the info.

I am just about to use Tomcat on AS400. There are two questions:

1.. As400 seems now ships with Tomcat installed. Is it a good idea to
use
this copy? Or maybe it is easier to install an Apache copy?
2.. Is there a way to connect Tomcat login to AS400 validation
list/AS400
userID (without storing these info in tomcat-users.xml)?
Thanks.

Bruce
