In general for JDBC no.
There are some things unrelated to Java that can be done, but
for this list, I'm sure they are uninteresting. 8-)
I'd do the last used thing with a daemon thread to intermittently
process idle connections.

I might try and fix the code before doing something like
this. Asynchronous closing of connections opens up all
sorts of freaky things.

The native driver has some good support for not letting you
leak connections or statements.
If you have leaks and you're running in JDK 1.2 or later, an
explicit call to the garbage collector once in a while could
probably cause us to cleanup the connections and statements
for you.

BUT...
1) The garbage collector can get pretty expensive sometimes.
2) If your code is actually keeping references to the object
around, calling the garbage collector won't help.

Technical: The use of JDK 1.2 weak references internally
ensures any references to these objects that stop their
garbage collection to be only held by the application, not
by the driver itself.
