Panic over - all is now well.  Seems that IBM didn't send us the right PTF
package the first time (or at least sent us a pre-req and then sent the "real"
thing several days later).  A new package arrived today and when applied did the
trick including updating us to V2.

Why on earth the advertised data area was not on the system is anybody's guess -
and it is there now.

Thanks to anyone who expended grey matter on this.
