You can put specs on other compiler directives, like /eject, /SPACE, and 
everyone's favorite - /EXEC SQL, so why not on /free?  In fact, there are 
times when the %$#@ing precompiler gets confused if you don't have a C 
spec first before the /free.  (Although I think a ptf has been issued for 
that.)

I didn't see the "C" (pos 6 spec descriptor) in your original post. /Free 
is really a compiler directive and should not have anything in Position 6. 
 Therefore CODE could not interpret the source correctly for color coding, 
and was probably just making a "best guess".
