That may be your experience - that fields with all blanks are considered
null.  Technically this is not true.  The issue I was having, however, that
fields with values other than null, or blanks, was considered null - if the
field began with a null byte.

My experience has been any character field which has
all blanks says 'null' in the distributed debugger.
