Ha ha ha. I've just been watching all these emails go back and forth all
morning and I think IBM is now saying, "OK!!! Who's big idea was it to
monitor this list, anyway?!!!". All great ideas though!

Thanks Michele, all we ask is that you consider such things, particularly
when future versions are being designed.

Hi Jon!
Providing a template for each spec and allowing the user to choose their
own tabbing (if they wanted
something other than the default) would definitely be the ideal solution.
I believe that would be a fairly substantial change but I will
investigate and see what can
be done.

Hi Michelle, glad to hear that you're on the Code team - now I know it'll
get done right (flatter flatter).

As far as tabs go, wouldn't it be simpler to just externalize the template
used and allow us to modify it to our hearts content? By all means default
to some internal value if we haven't supplied a template, but I'd certainly
like more control. There are things on F specs and D specs that I rarely
if
ever use and I'll happily backspace into them when needed. I just don't
want to have to tab more times than I need. For example the DS/S/PR
columns
on the D spec - I'd love to go straight there from the name entry. I'd
LOVE
to be able to set the start of name entry on position right since I always
have to hit the space bar to move the name away from the D, etc. etc.

Brian,

Unfortunately, as it stands the tabbing is hardcoded and not accessible to
the user of the product. So I'm afraid that you're stuck with tabbing for
now.
I'm looking into possibly providing an option (maybe in EXTRAS) that would
allow you to skip over the indicators and zip right to the factor 1 entry
for the next release.

Hello Hak,

Thanks for your timely reply.

I'm a newbie to CODE/400 and just trying to get comfortable with the editor
and it's features. Since I'm not sure that I would actually use this
feature
I can easily wait for the next fixpack to receive the macro.

A user interface for the tab settings would be great but I would be happy
for now just to be able to modify some code. Is the intelligent tabbing
contained in the rpgle.lx file or some other file that can be modified
directly by the user?

I'll try using the Smart Enter feature again. My problem is that I like to
leave blank lines in my code to separate the logic and when using the Smart
Enter I'm frequently having to tab back and erase the 'C'. However, I just
realized that I can use <Ctrl-Enter> to insert a completely blank line but
then pressing <Enter> or <Ctrl-Enter> on that blank line puts me back at
having to press the extra tabs. (Would you care for some cheese with that
whine? :-))

Thanks again for your reply and thank you for all your efforts with
CODE/400.

Brian.

P.S. This reply was originally sent on Thursday afternoon but apparently
didn't get posted before the system crashed.

Well, Brian:
this is a problem with the column sensitive editing menu item in SP3.
I must admit that the code change was integrated into SP3 with other fixes,
but with no intention of releasing the function. As a result, one macro
file extra\colsedit.lx is not packaged into SP3.
This should be corrected in the next fixpack. If there is a need for this,
I can send you this macro file.

As for tabbing to Column 12 in RGLE, currently there is no user interface
provided. I am told that there has been request for this feature and we are
considering it for. maybe next release.

Please Note that "Options->Language edting->Smart enter" will allow you to
enter at column 12.

Subject: Column Sensitive Editing

I am trying to activate the column sensitive editing feature. When I click
on the item in the Extras menu I receive the message "The EXTRAS menu is
now
used to change the setting. CODE FIELDS is no longer used." and the column
sensitive editing feature is now checked but not activated. I now click on
the menu item to remove the check mark and I receive the same message. The
menu item remains checked and the column sensitive editing is not active.
Any ideas?

Another question. When editing an RPGLE source member is there a way to
turn
off the tab stops for the left hand indicator columns (cols 7&9) and have
the cursor move directly to the factor 1 column (col 12)?

TIA,

Brian
