here is my favorite horror story about compiler options
(this actually happened to me about 20 years ago).
Program A was compiled with the mainframe option NOTRUNC
and had a dataitem FLAG PIC S9(4) COMP-4. A would
MOVE -32768 to FLAG, then call B which had the same
dataitem defined in linkage, but was compiled with TRUNC.
B could then reset the flag by MOVE FLAG TO FLAG, which
would get rid of the sign bit. Very clever, and very dangerous.
(I was involved with porting the programs to another
system that did not have the NOTRUNC/TRUNC options).
