This CHaracter Coded Set can also be changed in the file transfer.  Use 
File, Properties, then select Convert CCSID 65535. And I think the 
Query/400 output files will transfer for you as well.

If the fields are created in the Result field section within Query400 OR 
are
output to a database file you are creating I have experienced problems 
also.
I think it is because of the Character Coded Set(CCS) the new field is set
to.  Do a DSPFFD on the file you are creating and look at the CCS of the
field you are having problems downloading versus other fields that are
downloading correctly.    Kevin W.
