This is the approach I take to SQL stored procedures on the IBMi. I have two optional (default null) parameters: one is for JSON passed in by the calling program, and the other is for JSON returned to the calling program. I use the SQL JSON functions delivered with DB2 for i for all JSON processing.
I know you're on an earlier version of MySQL, but MySQL 8 has JSON functions.
