A follow-up.  In the end it was quite simple.  Consuming a web service with an RPG program is simple enough that I can see an i-series shop choosing to deliver Super User data with json, and using  that json as the data source for RPG applications, too. Not always of course, but it certainly makes sense for Intranet use.
