Rich,

You're correct, the apache server isn't treating the JSON data as text
anymore because of the content type.

If you're using YAJL, it's as easy as specifying *ON in the first parm of
this function call:

docNode = yajl_stdin_load_tree(*on:yajl_errMsg);

You didn't mention if you're using a roll your own or something else.
