From my experience, using a connection is common for toolkits. Java
toolkit, Smalltalk did the same. When running with platform independence,
using a connection provides the function of identifying the exact IP and
system to run a command.

For example, when running Java on the IBM i, I can run a CL command on some
other machine. The connection provides the IBM i job where it is actually
executed.
